8 Ways to Prepare for Back-to-School

8 Ways to Prepare for Back-to-School

There’s one thing that’s true about going back to school.

It ALWAYS comes too fast.

Before you know it, you’re battling crowds for that last yellow folder with pockets and meeting the teacher.

And if that wasn’t enough to make our heads spin, there’s all non-school related to-do’s! The doctor’s appointments, summer birthdays, and playdates.

Good thing we have coffee!

Anyway, that’s why we’ve come up with a plan to ease our way back to school and end those last-minute stresses. Here are 8 things you’ll wanna get done BEFORE the school-chatter starts. . . and maybe even send your kiddos back to school stress-free :)

Schedule a Yearly Check-up

Annual doctor’s visits can sneak up on us, and often, at the most inconvenient times! To avoid last-minute hiccups, schedule your kiddo’s yearly check-ups during the summer. This way you can:

Get Teeth Squeaky Clean

We won’t ask who follows the recommended 6 month teeth cleaning for their kiddos. . . but we will say, it maaaayyyyyy be a good idea to get a dentist appointment in the books.

Especially after a hot summer with lots of ice cream and popsicles! ‘Cause as we know, all that excess sugar can harm little teeth and is the leading cause of tooth decay in children.

So let’s get those teeth squeaky clean this summer and avoid cavities.

Start a Morning Routine

Routine gets a bad rap, especially during the summer. But morning routines are great year-round and can help make the back-to-school transition easier.

You can start off small with a simple routine of:

  • Brush your teeth
  • Eat a healthy breakfast
  • Take a multivitamin for kids

Give Back to the Community

There never seems to be enough time to volunteer. Which makes summer a great time to teach our kiddos about giving back to the community!

You can sign up for a formal volunteering event such as an animal shelter or delivering meals. Or, you can create your own! Here are a few ways to teach your kiddos about giving back in your own community:

  • Rake a neighbor’s yard
  • Clean up a local park
  • Write “Thank You” cards

Declutter your Kiddo’s Closet

Before heading out for back-to-school clothes shopping, take time to go through your kiddo’s closet. Find out:

  • What clothes you can retire
  • What clothes needs repair
  • What you can donate

This is also a great time to go through kid’s toys, shoes, backpacks, and art supplies!

Schedule Haircuts

Oh, haircuts – how easy it is to forget until the night before picture day.

But not this year! Knock out one more thing from your to-do list by taking your kiddo in for a haircut. You’ll beat the back-to-school crowd and avoid any picture day fiascos.

Take Family Pics

Family photos are usually taken around the holidays. And as festive as they are, the holidays are the busiest time of the year!

Instead, save yourself some stress and take your family portraits in the summer. It’s less hectic and schedules are more open. Plus, you can show off your summer tans!

Plan One Last Fun Activity

As summer comes to an end and we gear up for back-to-school, one last summer activity is the icing on the cake!

Here are a few fun ideas to bookend the perfect summer:

  • Head out of town with the kiddos for an impromptu vacation.
  • Fire up the grill for a summer barbecue with friends and family.
  • Catch an outdoor movie with the family – or set one up in your backyard.

Whatever you do, the most important thing is to slow down and spend time as a family. We all know time flies, and these moments with our kiddos are the ones we’ll cherish the most!
