6 Allergy Superfoods Kids Love

6 Allergy Superfoods Kids Love

The Greek founder of Western Medicine, Hippocrates, taught us a thing or two about medicine. Like how to fix runny noses, what to do about upset tummies, and always treating patients with care! But he also said:

“Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.”

And that got us thinking. . .

Since Spring has our eyes watering and noses running, why not take Hippocrates’ advice? Afterall, he is THE father of medicine!

So, let’s use the power of nutrition to tackle these pesky allergies once and for all. Here are 6 allergy season superfoods you’ll want to enjoy this Spring.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruit, are particularly high in one vitamin – Vitamin C. This makes citrus fruits a wonder for fighting allergies!

You see, Vitamin C does more than boost our immunity. It’s loaded with natural antihistamines and antioxidants that can reduce seasonal allergies, protect cells from damage, and help the body fight infections.

But, as with all superstars, there’s lots of lookalikes pretending to be the real heroes. And they go by the name of JUICE – sugar-filled fruit juice to be exact. Orange juice, apple juice, and fruit punch are the popular ones. They’re filled with sugar, artificial flavors, and dyes – yikes! Talk about a cavity waiting to happen.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are another allergy season superfood. Which is great news since tomatoes are kid-friendly! And if you’re like, “Nu-uh, not for my kiddo” Keep reading ;)

Not only are tomatoes high in Vitamin C, they also contain a special superpower called lycopene. It’s what gives tomatoes their red color. But that’s not all it does.

Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that helps fight against:

  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Heart problems
  • Inflammation ⇐ super important during allergy season!
  • And lots of other diseases

And it’s those anti-inflammatory benefits of lycopene, along with Vitamin C, that make tomatoes an allergy season superfood.

But if you have a picky eater that won’t touch tomatoes, or any healthy food for that matter, one  of our favorite mom hacks for tomatoes is making it into a sauce. Homemade is best, but a store-bought sauce with minimal ingredients and no sugar is great too.

Onions

Speaking of sneaking foods into a sauce. . . onions are another top superfood for allergies. And super easy to sauce up ;)

Similar to tomatoes, onions have a special superpower called quercetin. Quercetin is also known as “Nature’s Benadryl” because it’s a natural antihistamine. Researchers also say quercetin is “a good supplement to manage and treat allergic diseases, especially rhinitis.”

Which is the science-ey way of saying yes to onions this allergy season! Other foods that contain quercetin include:

  • Apples
  • Buckwheat
  • Red grapes
  • Cherries

Pineapple

Some things just go better together: peanut butter & jelly, 2 peas in a pod, and Quercetin & Bromelain. Bromelain is another natural antihistamine. And combined with its buddy, quercetin, these two are a force for good!

Pineapple is a great source of Bromelain. And, you know else pineapple high in? Yup, you guessed it – Vitamin C! That means on a sunny day, enjoy a pineapple, apple, and red grape fruit salad for a powerful anti-allergy snack!

Yogurt

Along with being kid-friendly, yogurt is also super high in probiotics. And probiotics are another allergy relief wonder! When taken during allergy season, probiotics have been shown to lower allergy symptoms and even prevent them! Although the exact science isn’t widely known, it may be because children’s probiotics help balance our kiddo’s tummies — which promotes better immunity!

Salmon

There are so many reasons to love salmon. It’s high in omega-3’s fatty acids which have antihistamine and anti-inflammatory superpowers. And they strengthen our immune system!

But that’s not all.

Salmon is also high in:

  • Vitamin D – perfect for strong bones
  • Vitamin B6 – great for growing brains
  • Iron – one of the main mineral deficiencies in children in the US

It’s no wonder salmon is one of our favorites! So, if you have the sniffles, make sure to load up on these allergy season superfoods.
